A Brief Overview

A Brief Overview of Services Provided by Alpha School for Public School Districts

Alpha School provides educational services to youths who are referred from the public schools. Depending upon their state of residence, students must be verified by the referring school district as Behavior Disordered (BD) according to the criteria established in Nebraska Rule 51 Special Education Law or according to the criteria established in the Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education "Administrative Rules of Special Education".

Students are typically referred to Alpha school because they are physically aggressive, verbally aggressive, and have emotional difficulties. They are often students who are involved with social services, mental health and the juvenile justice systems. The students can range in ages from five to twenty-one years. The cognitive abilites of the students range from low-average through very bright. Alpha School has an individualized, full day program (6 hours per day), that is designed to help students deal with their problems and return to a public school setting.

Alpha School provides a full academic and social skills curriculum for students. The learning expectations are high for Sutdents attending Alpha School. Students are continually and progressively challenged to improve their academic and behavioral performances. Every effort is made to help students who are behind academically to get to grade level, or above, before they leave the program. High school students earn credits toward a diploma and can receive a diploma from their neighborhood high school.
